Sea ducks spend most of their lives on the open ocean. They can dive deep underwater to catch prey like crabs. To stay safe and warm in the cold water, they often gather in massive groups called "rafts." Sea ducks have special feathers that work like a warm, waterproof coat to keep them dry in freezing ocean water.
Long-tailed Duck
Long-tailed ducks can be found in the Arctic. Males have a striking white face with a black chest and really long tail feathers. Females have a pale cheek patch and are gray-brown. They are able to swim down 200 feet deep underwater.

Surf Scoter
Surf Scoters can be found in Northern Canada, Alaska, and the US coast. Males have a distinctive orange, white, and black bill with white patches both on the forehead and back of the neck. Females have two patches on the face with a brown body. They are briefly flightless in the winter because of the molting season.

Black Scoter
Black Scoters are found in Northern Canada and Alaska. Males are entirely black with yellow orange knob on the bill. Females have a gradation of feather color from brown to dark brown.

Common Eider
Common Eiders are found Northern Atlantic coasts. Males are bold, black, and white. Also, their sloping forehead is the common feature of eiders. Females are brown and large. When they take their babies to the water, other females go with them to help.

King Eider
King Eiders are usually found in the Arctic. Males have a red and orange bill with a pearl blue crown and spring green cheeks. Females have rusty black and brown marbling in their feathers. Some of the King Eiders migrate by moving through high-elevation mountain passes.
